Istra\u017eivanja su pokazala da se u tim periodima doga\u0111a niz biolo\u0161kih promjena. Prvi vrhunac, u srednjim 40-im godinama, povezan je s promjenama u metabolizmu lipida, kofeina i alkohola, te s pove\u0107anim rizikom od kardiovaskularnih bolesti, promjena na ko\u017ei i slabljenja mi\u0161i\u0107ne mase.<\/p>\n<p>Drugi vrhunac, oko 60. godine, obuhva\u0107a promjene u metabolizmu ugljenih hidrata i kofeina, imunolo\u0161ku regulaciju, funkciju bubrega te dodatne promjene na ko\u017ei i mi\u0161i\u0107ima. Iako menopauza mo\u017ee igrati va\u017enu ulogu kod \u017eena u 40-im godinama, istra\u017eivanje pokazuje da se zna\u010dajne molekularne promjene doga\u0111aju i kod mu\u0161karaca iste dobi, \u0161to ukazuje na \u0161iri biolo\u0161ki mehanizam koji uti\u010de na oba pola.
